Frequently Asked Questions

When can I water after an application?
Please check your insert for watering and mowing instructions. There will also be a complete description of the application on the invoice. Most of our applications do not require watering and will be okay to wait until rainfall. If a post emergent weed control was applied, it is best to wait until the application has dried for a few hours for optimum results.

What happens if it rains following an application?
Rain is actually beneficial for pre-emergent and fertilizer applications and there is no need to reapply. However, some applications may be affected by rain, in particular post emergent weed control which needs a few hours of adhering to the weeds. We DO NOT apply our applications in heavy rain, as this is not a good practice. But sometimes a rainfall is known to happen after an application, so in these cases we ask you to wait a few days if you do have weeds in the lawn, to see if they respond to our application. If not, we will be more than happy to re-apply the weed control at no additional charge.

How long before my children and pets can walk on the yard after an application?
Most of our applications are in granular form; after we leave it is fine to walk on the lawn. When we apply weed control, we apply it in liquid form for best results. In this case, wait a few hours after application is complete. Refer back to your invoice for the time printed; this is the time we finished and wrote down what has applied.

It is best to wait 24 hours. Also if you normally bag your trimmings, we strongly recommend leaving the clippings down for at least two mowing.

Are some weeds worse than others to get rid of?
Yes…. Weeds like Yellow Nutsedge, Crabgrass and Wild Violets are at the top of the difficulty scale...and there are some conditions under which weeds like these can pose real control problems. With our full standard lawn care program, we apply the best products at the right time so that the best control is achieved.

When does your lawn care start for the year and do I call you to continue the following season?
Typically, we start our lawn care program in March, weather permitting, normally with an early season fertilizer to help green the grass up and a pre emergent for crabgrass control. This is considered Round 1 on our full standard program.
There is no need to call us to continue our service, unless you have a question or want to discontinue your service. Our service automatically continues from season to season and from year to year. Over the winter we will send you a packet of information outlining your program and any price adjustments, if any, for the upcoming season. In this packet you will also find an opportunity to pre pay for the year and save money.

I have this area where grass is hard to grow; can you get grass to grow?
Some areas are harder to grow grass than others. We are trained to take the correct steps for healthy grass. Sometimes it is as simple as properly seeding at the right time of the year to get grass growing and keeping it fertilized throughout the year. Other times further steps must be taken such as testing the soil to see if lime or special fertilizers are needed, or pruning overhanging tree limbs to let more sunlight through to the ground. Also we can take a look at other potential reasons like leaf cover, standing water, or traffic by foot or car. Sometimes, though, grass isn’t always the best answer. That is when we can get creative and suggest maybe mulching an area, like around a tree, or maybe a brick patio in a shaded area.

Does a "pre-emergent" prevent all weeds?
Unfortunately, NO...pre-emergent herbicides are wonderful and work very well on crabgrass, spurge, oxalis, goose grass, poa annua, and several others. These weeds are called “annuals”. “Perennials” must be controlled after they emerge from the soil. These are weeds like white clover, dandelions, yellow nutsedge and wild violets.

When is the best time to seed?
The best time to seed the lawn is in the fall. You get better results when the seeding is done in September or October. The best way to accomplish this is by aerating and overseeding the lawn at the same time. This not only helps with loosening the soil so you get good seed-soil contact, but it also helps your existing turf through the aeration process by aerifying the soil and allowing the grass roots to further expand in the soil. In the long run, this makes for a thick and healthy turf stand. This service is recommended annually in the fall of the year.
